Production Team
These are the folks who really define and maintain the great reputation we have in the marketplace. Few would disagree that almost anyone can make a web site today, but making a great web site—one that works and makes you money—takes a staff of people that know what they’re doing. When you think about it, there are a lot of different skills that are necessary to make a great web site, and few individuals possess all of the required skills to make it happen:
Strategist
Before even thinking about how your web site looks or functions, our Customer Service Leaders first define the basics, such as who will look at your site, why they will look at it, what will keep them coming back, and what the financial metrics of the site are. Only after this crucial blue print has been created can we begin the physical creation of a site.
Project Manager
From concept to completion you will be assigned a project manager who will act as your point of contact between your company and the team members developing your site. The project manager’s role is to make sure your needs and wishes are well advised and implemented throughout the process of creating your site.
Graphic Designer
After the blue print has been developed, the next step is to create the look and feel of the site. That first impression is critical. This job falls to an Art Director, a specialist in our industry who not only understands the need for the site to look great, but also how it must technically function.
Copywriter
In addition to the site looking great, it must have substance. That means it needs to properly and effectively communicate all the salient points of your company and your products. It must inform. It must educate. Sometimes, it must entertain.
Programmers
Let’s not forget that a web site is a computer program. All the “neat” functionality you see—buttons changing color when you mouse over them, new pages loading when you click a link, etc.—these technical feats are achieved by programmers who understand the technical aspects of the Internet. They ensure the page loads quickly and functions as envisioned.
Database Programmers
More and more web sites today are interactive; we’re asking people to tell us who they are, and we want to capture that information. Customers and suppliers are wanting more information, and wanting it faster. To accomplish this, more and more web sites are being tied into accounting programs and other business applications. One of the strengths of the Internet is that it is a point of disseminating information. What better way to lower your costs of doing business than having customers and vendors serve themselves 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
e-Commerce Programmers
For many companies, a major strength of their web site is the ability for customers to place orders through it. Accomplishing that task requires a specialist; someone who truly understands the entire ordering process: presenting the items on the web, taking the order, collecting the money, authorizing the transfer of funds, getting the order shipped, communicating to you the specifics of the transaction, and integrating all of this into your accounting program.
Multimedia Specialist
As the Internet increases its technical abilities to deliver audio and video, so too does the need for ensuring that the message is properly communicated. That means understanding the technical abilities and limitations this unique medium; understanding that video delivered on the Internet is different than on TV, that audio must be specially treated, etc.
As you’ve concluded, it’s nearly impossible for any one person, or even a couple of individuals to be good at all these things. Making a great web site requires a great team!
