I made so many mistakes with keyword research but now that I read posts like yours and other keyword research related articles, I think I will find it easier to rank for keywords with decent traffic.

Okay – I had to laugh. Your first example is my business… one in which we have really pushed hard to get into the top ten. Sorry, not the top ten results… the top ten pages.

So we targeted “auto glass appointment” for our key words first… and we are number one for that phrase, but receive almost no traffic for that effort.

It’s frustrating, but you get the first phrase, you go conquer the competition, then you start working on the others.

I find that both bloggers and business owners tend to either pick phrases that are too long and unlikely to generate many searches or far too broad and difficult to get ranked.

You also have to be realistic with what keywords you choose as there has to be a relatively high probability that someone will use those keywords as a search term. There’s no point in ranking no 1 for a particular keywords if no-one is ever going to use it.
